Mini Case Study: Helping a Leading European Insurance Company Navigate Transformation

What does it mean to work with Northshore on your transformation journey? Here is a mini case study based on our engagement with a leading European insurance company.

Before: Transformation efforts were falling short

As a long-standing player in their space, this company was experiencing market disruption. Their hierarchical organisational structure and waterfall approach to software development meant that they were falling short when it came to customer experience expectations. In response, they had set up digital labs as incubators for lean, agile, and more customer-centric product innovation and development. But twelve months into their effort, they weren’t sure if these programs were making any real progress or impact.

The Northshore approach

We began our engagement with this company with targeted discovery work. Our goal was to understand which components of their product ecosystem were enabling or blocking delivery of value. We worked with teams and leadership to observe key ceremonies, conduct interviews, and hold workshops.

Next, we created a roadmap to address the gaps we’d identified and evolve the digital labs to the next level of maturity.

We provided support for executing the roadmap and coached digital lab leaders on establishing team structure as well as product intake, innovation, and development processes.

Northshore’s areas of focus

During our engagement with this company, we identified the following areas of focus.

Transformation vision, metrics, and target operating model: How do they define and measure the success of the digital labs?

  • Customer-centric practises and outcome-oriented product development: What are the specific tactics that digital labs should adopt?

  • Continuous learning culture: How can digital lab leadership build a tolerance for pivoting, or failure, and bring teams together with shared outcomes?

  • Aligned governance: What should planning, funding, and oversight look like for the digital labs?

  • Talent growth: How should they approach recruiting, training, and creating role clarity for members of the digital labs?

  • Leadership role & support: What are the guiding principles for digital lab leaders? How can they best support their teams and bring their learnings to the broader organisation?
